  • What is a productive cough?

A productive cough, also known as a mucus cough or sputum cough, is characterised by the formation of mucus in the airways, particularly in the bronchi. In contrast to a dry irritable cough, which usually occurs at the beginning of a cold or a flu infection, a productive cough usually only develops during the later stages of the illness. Bronchitis can also be associated with a productive cough.

Mucus occurs in the airways as a natural reaction of the body to inflammation or infection. Although sufferers usually find the cough unpleasant and annoying, it performs an important function in the body by helping to transport pathogens and foreign matter out of the airways. However, if the mucus is stuck, coughing is more difficult and symptoms are exacerbated.

The secretion and mucus must therefore be loosened to relieve the symptoms. This is where Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup comes in: it can loosen the stuck mucus to make it easier to cough up, allowing the airways to clear and the cough to eventually improve.

  • Ivy and its healing effect in respiratory diseases

The leaves of the ivy plant (Hedera helix) are one of the most important medicinal plants for treating coughs. Ivy helps loosen the mucus stuck in the bronchi, making it easier to cough up.

Herbal expectorants containing the active ingredient dried ivy extract are well tolerated and show a low potential for side effects. This is also the case with ivy extracts as expectorants, which is why patients with a productive cough can benefit from treatment with ivy cough syrup.

  • Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup: dosage and administration

How much cough syrup should be taken and how often depends on the age of the patient. In principle, the advice of a doctor or advice given at the pharmacy always applies. Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup comes with a dosing pipette with accurate millimetre markings for optimal dispensing. The syrup can either be dissolved in water or ingested undiluted followed by a sufficient amount of fluid (1 glass of water). All important information on dosing and administration of Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup can be found in the patient information leaflet.

  • Supporting measures in the case of a productive cough

In addition to using Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup, other measures and home remedies can help support expectoration to alleviate a productive cough faster:

    • Drink plenty of fluids: a lot of fluid – preferably hot water, herbal teas or hot broth – helps to loosen the mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. At least 2–3 litres of sugar-free drinks per day are recommended.
    • Increase the humidity: dry indoor air is often an additional irritant for inflamed mucous membranes. Damp towels on a radiator or a humidifier can help increase the humidity at home. Inhalation also helps to keep the mucous membranes moist and relieve symptoms.
    • Rest and relaxation: adequate sleep and rest are important to ensure that the body has enough strength to recover.

Frequently asked questions about Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup

  • Is Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup suitable for children?

Bronchofit® cough expectorant must be taken by adults, adolescents and children over one year of age. It is well tolerated and, thanks to its fruity cherry flavour, also delicious for children. Care must be taken to ensure the correct dose is used.

  • Does Bronchofit® Syrup also help with dry coughs?

The herbal ivy cough syrup is specifically designed to treat productive coughs. Bronchofit® should not be used to treat a dry cough without mucus. In this case, a cough suppressant should be used instead of an expectorant.

  • Can pregnant women take Bronchofit® Ivy Cough Syrup?

Medical advice should always be sought before using medicines during pregnancy and breast-feeding. There are insufficient data on ivy preparations such as Bronchofit® Cough Syrup and they should therefore not be used by pregnant women and nursing mothers.
